A failed Bitcoin ATM robbery won’t ruin Thanksgiving

Two thieves destroyed the front wall of a deli in Canada after a failed attempt to rob a Bitcoin ATM

A deli in the Canadian city of Kelowna, British Columbia, was severely damaged after two clumsy criminals attempted to rob a Bitcoin ATM installed in an adjacent store.

At approximately 3 a.m. on October 7, the two suspects unsuccessfully attempted to rob the Bitcoin System located on the back wall of the neighboring store. While attempting to flee empty-handed, they backed their white GMC Sierra pickup truck into L&D Meats and Deli and broke through the front wall.

The chance of being caught seems pretty high, as local police said the thieves managed to leave their tailgate behind. Solana Paré, a spokesperson for the Kelowna police said:

„A preliminary assessment made by staff at the site suggests that, despite the thousands of dollars in damage caused, nothing appears to have been taken from inside the company, as the suspects were unable to take over the Bitcoin ATM.

Having a Bitcoin ATM will be much more difficult in Germany

Given how inept the robbery attempt was, you have to wonder if the criminals were expecting to steal the Bitcoins inside the machine, or if they were looking for cash.

Deli owner Don Favell lamented the timing of the incident, noting that Thanksgiving is fast approaching and his customers expect to receive ordered meat before the vacation.

Favell said that the damages will be covered by his insurance and that he is now focused on trying to get his business back up and running. He told the local media, „That’s all we can do, take care of everyone.

„You’ll get your turkeys,“ he promised.

Bitcoin’s ATM robbery doesn’t seem to attract the most sophisticated criminals. In November 2001, two thieves broke into a grocery store in British Columbia to open a Bitcoin ATM installed inside. They stole $4,000 but accidentally left $50,000.
